Message I haven't kept close records, by my 1997 civic that cost me $1900 to buy 3.5 years ago has definitely cost me less than $1500 in maintenance, and I've put 105k+ on it in that time. I bought it with 124k, and I'm about to turn over 232k. A rough breakdown from memory, leaving out oil changes:

105k scheduled maintenance items (tbelt, tensioner, oil seals, water pump, etc etc) - ~$200

2 sets of tires - ~$300/set (~$600 total)

AC condenser (punctured when I got the car) - $50

Clutch & RMS - ~$100

Front Exhaust pipe, Muffler - ~$200

2 sets of brake pads - ~$60

Trans bearings (1 started whining a bit around 200k) - ~$100

Wheels bearing - ~$100

Now granted if I didn't do my own work, and had to pay for labor, I'd probably have 2-3k in labor racked up on top of those part costs. If you do you own work, and are just concerned with getting a car that is cheap to own, there is a lot to be said for an older civic/corolla/accord/prizm/etc as long as you look it over well before you buy it.
